LB&SCR E1 No.110 "Burgundy"

No. 110, 'Burgundy', is the sole survivor of the E1 class of 0-6-0 tank which ran on the London Brighton & South Coast Railway. 'Burgundy' has been out of service since 1996, but until that time was a very useful and much-loved member of the East Somerset's loco fleet. It now requires a major boiler and motion overhaul to be returned to steam.

The estimated cost of returning No. 110 to service is £25,000. This covers all materials and external services, but NOT the time and skills provided by ESR volunteers. With the money available at the right time for the necessary purchases, we plan to have No. 110 back in steam for its 126th birthday in 2003.

Why restore 'Burgundy' ?

No. 110 is the only remaining example of its class. Though there are a number of its smaller cousins - the A1 or 'Terrier' class - preserved, this is the only E1 in existence.

In fact, only three classes of LB&SCR loco remain: the Terriers, B1 class 214 'Gladstone' at the NRM, and E1 No. 110. We feel strongly that this historic loco deserves to breathe steam again, well into its second century!

And not least, the East Somerset Railway urgently needs another loco on its roster - this will allow other locos to be overhauled without reducing services or visitor interest. No. 110 will also be invaluable as the ESR develops and extends.
